Maybe My Dad Was Right!

“By the time a man realises that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he is wrong.” ― Charles Wadsworth

With three teenage children aged 19, 17 and 15, I am right in the phase of life where I fully understand what Charles Wadsworth meant with his famous quote.

Long are gone the days when daddy was seen as a superhero.

Teenagers, like two years old toddlers (a.k.a. Terrible Twos), are filled with a huge desire for independence that creates regular conflicts with their parents. But teenage years last longer…

A friend with older children assures me that this period too will pass. I have to believe her!

Because there is no school to learn to be a good father or indeed a good mother, everyone tries their own recipe for parenthood. Mine is based on the premise that only love can help us parents navigate through these waters that can be turbulent at times.

One day my children will have children of their own, and I want them to be able to look back and see that it was only love that guided my actions. In the same way that today I look back and see love in my parents’ actions.

Happy Fathers’ Day!
